Segmentectomy vs lobectomy for small lung cancer

Lung Adenocarcinoma

Part of Cancer clinical trials.

This trial compares two lung-surgery options for small lung adenocarcinoma (≤ 2 cm): removing a lung segment versus removing an entire lobe. It aims to see which operation controls the cancer while preserving lung function.

Who can take part

  • You are 20 to 79 years old and can give informed consent
  • Your lung tumor/nodule is 2 cm or smaller on the pre-op CT scan
  • Your CT scan shows it is not a “pure ground-glass” nodule (your doctor uses a ratio to decide this)
  • During surgery, a quick pathology test must show invasive lung adenocarcinoma, with limited micropapillary/solid pattern (not more than 5%)
  • Your surgeon must be able to get clear surgical margins (no tumor at the cut edge)
  • Your lung and major organ function must be strong enough for either surgery option

Segmentectomy versus lobectomy for small lung cancer

This trial compares two types of lung surgery—removing a small lung segment versus removing an entire lung lobe—for small lung adenocarcinoma (≤ 2 cm). It may help you choose the safest approach that still controls the cancer.

NCT07169903Not yet recruiting· Phase 3
Lung cancer surgery: Removing a segment vs. a lobe for 2-3 cm tumors

This trial compares two types of surgery for early-stage lung cancer tumors that are 2-3 cm in size: removing just the affected segment of the lung (segmentectomy) or removing the entire lobe (lobectomy). It aims to see if the smaller surgery works just as well and may help you recover faster.

NCT06634966Recruiting· Phase 3
Lung cancer surgery study for specific nodule types

This trial is testing a lung-sparing surgery called segmentectomy for people with a certain type of lung cancer nodule. It aims to see if this surgery is a good option for those with solid-dominant nodules that are 2 to 3 cm in size and have not spread to lymph nodes.

Surgery choice for certain early lung cancers with glasslike nodules

This study compares a lung surgery approach (segmentectomy) for people with early, invasive lung cancer that shows “ground-glass” on scans. It aims to see if this less extensive surgery can treat the cancer effectively when the tumor is in a specific size and scan pattern range.

NCT06031181Recruiting· Phase 3
Sublobar resection for early lung cancer found during surgery

This trial tests if a smaller surgery (sublobar resection) works well for patients with very early-stage lung cancer (adenocarcinoma in situ or minimally invasive adenocarcinoma) that is found during the operation. It may help avoid removing more lung tissue than necessary.

NCT06031246Recruiting· Phase 3
Lymph node surgery study for early-stage lung cancer in the upper lung

This trial tests whether a more focused lymph node removal during surgery is safe and effective for people with a small, early-stage lung cancer (non-small cell type) located in the top part of the lung (apical segment).
