Who can take part

  • You are having elective spinal fusion surgery
  • Your hospital stay is expected to be at least 3 days
  • You can speak and understand English well enough to participate in the study
  • You do not have a known allergy or bad reaction to lidocaine
  • Your heart, liver, and kidneys are healthy enough for lidocaine (not severe problems)
  • You have no current confusion before surgery (no preoperative delirium) and have not joined certain related studies before
