Who can take part

  • You are age 65 or older
  • You are scheduled for elective lumbar spinal fusion of 1–3 levels
  • You do not have serious heart or lung problems (especially needing home oxygen)
  • You have no known dementia and can communicate/cooperate with the study
  • You have no major liver or kidney problems or serious blood clotting issues
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding and are not allergic to the study medicines
