Who can take part

  • You can sign consent and are hospitalized with pneumonia that is less than 48 hours in the hospital
  • You need extra oxygen because of pneumonia (or you were admitted for another reason and then developed pneumonia)
  • Chest imaging (like X-ray/CT) shows new or worsening lung infection (infiltrate, consolidation, or cavitation)
  • You must have at least 1 sign (for example: fast breathing, fever, abnormal white blood cells, age 70+, or confusion without another cause) and at least 1 symptom (for example: new/worse cough, trouble breathing, purulent sputum, or abnormal lung sounds)
  • If you can become pregnant, you must use effective birth control
  • You should not be pregnant or breastfeeding
