Who can take part

  • You have throat cancer in the oropharynx (tonsil and/or the side of the tongue base) confirmed by biopsy
  • Your cancer is HPV-negative (p16 test is negative)
  • The tumor can be removed completely with surgery (surgeon believes clear margins are possible), and it is not inoperable
  • Your disease is stage III or IV but does not have spread below the collarbone
  • You must be able to have general anesthesia and your general health score is 0–2
  • Your blood counts, liver, and kidney tests are strong enough for cisplatin chemotherapy and radiation
