Radiation vs mouth surgery for HPV-negative throat cancer

Who can take part

  • You’re 18 or older and can sign informed consent
  • Your cancer is squamous cell carcinoma and is in the oropharynx (tonsil/soft palate/base of tongue/throat area)
  • Your tumor is HPV-negative based on lab testing (p16 and/or PCR or tissue hybridization); uncertain results may still be allowed
  • Your cancer is early to limited (T1–T2) and may be curatively treated, with a plan for clear (negative) surgery margins
  • Your cancer is not metastatic (it has not spread to distant sites)
  • You can do treatment and follow-up, and you can complete quality-of-life questionnaires
