Virtual reality during awake orthopedic or brain surgery

This pilot study tests whether a virtual reality (VR) headset can be used safely while you have certain types of surgery while you are awake or lightly sedated with local numbing. The goal is to see if VR can fit into surgery care for appropriate patients.

Who can take part

  • You are an adult who can legally join the study
  • You can give informed consent and are willing to participate
  • Your planned orthopedic surgery must last at least 1 hour and use local numbing (a local anesthetic block)
  • If you are having awake brain surgery, your care team must confirm it’s appropriate for you
  • You do not have memory/cognitive limits on a thinking test (MMSE below the study’s cutoff)
  • You can safely tolerate the VR headset (no severe vision problems, no vertigo, and no strong claustrophobia)
