  • Be an adult age 18 to 80
  • Be on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) in the ICU within 48 hours of ICU admission
  • Expect to stay in the ICU for more than 72 hours
  • Be able to give voluntary informed consent (or have consent as allowed by the study)
  • Not have had surgery in the last 24 hours
  • Not be pregnant
