This trial studies whether inhaling hypertonic (very salty) saline helps treat nodular-bronchiectatic lung disease caused by Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC). It may help reduce ongoing infection and symptoms if you have the right type of MAC lung pattern and have not recently started the usual MAC treatments.

Who can take part

  • You have nodular-bronchiectatic MAC lung disease (symptoms plus matching abnormal lung imaging and cultures)
  • You have had at least 1 positive MAC sputum culture in the last 4 months
  • You were not on any MAC antibiotic treatment in the last 6 months
  • Your MAC is not the fibrocavitary type (a different, more scarred/cavity form seen on scans)
  • You are not already using inhaled hypertonic saline, and you tolerated the screening inhalation test
  • You do not have conditions that could interfere or make the study unsafe (like HIV, cystic fibrosis, active TB/fungal/nocardia needing treatment, or lung cancer needing recent/ongoing chemo or radiation)
