Who can take part

  • You can sign consent, are between 18 and 75 years old
  • Your pain has lasted more than 12 months and is on one side of the body or face
  • Your pain is from a specific cause: stroke-related nerve pain, or certain facial nerve pain causes (such as shingles nerve pain after zoster)
  • Your pain is severe (pain score on a 0–10 scale is over 6) and you’ve tried standard nerve-pain medicines at good doses for long enough
  • You’re able to undergo surgery and MRI safely, and you don’t have a device like a pacemaker/defibrillator
  • You don’t have major memory/cognitive problems, serious psychiatric illness, major substance/psychosocial risks, and you can follow all study steps; you’re not pregnant or able to become pregnant
