Who can take part

  • You’re 18 or older (and not pregnant).
  • You’ve been on an invasive breathing machine for more than 48 hours.
  • Your ICU team is planning a spontaneous breathing trial based on oxygen and ventilator settings, plus cough and alertness checks.
  • You have at least one higher-risk condition for lung fluid during weaning: obesity, chronic COPD, or chronic heart disease.
  • You do not have any major exclusions like DNR (no resuscitation plan), tracheostomy, pacemaker, or severe heart valve disease.
