Who can take part

  • You are in the intensive care unit with acute respiratory failure.
  • You have been on a ventilator for 48 hours or more in a controlled mode.
  • You are between 40 and 55 years old.
  • You are awake and able to follow commands (Glasgow Coma Scale score of 13 or higher).
  • You are calm but not too sleepy (Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale score of 0 or -1).
  • Your blood pressure and heart rate are stable, and you can trigger your own breaths on the ventilator.
