Breathing test methods for overweight patients on ventilators

This study compares two ways of testing if overweight or obese patients can breathe on their own after being on a ventilator. You will be randomly assigned to one of two breathing trials (pressure support or a T-piece) to see which works better for helping you get off the ventilator.

Who can take part

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must have been on a breathing machine for more than 24 hours.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) must be 25 or higher (overweight or obese).
  • Your vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate) must be stable.
  • You must be awake enough to follow commands, and not be on continuous sedatives.
