- You are over 17 years old
- Before this emergency, your neurologic function was fairly good (Modified Rankin Scale 1–3)
- The breathing tube is placed during an emergency need in the emergency department, ICU, or hospital floor
- The tube placement is not done in the operating room
- You are not pregnant
- This is not for a head injury, severe seizure status (status epilepticus), or primary brain problem
