Who can take part

  • You are in an intensive care unit and currently have a breathing tube (intubated).
  • Your care team plans a percutaneous tracheostomy using a dilating technique for medical reasons like long breathing-machine support or trouble weaning.
  • You are 18 to 85 years old.
  • You do not have major neck or trachea problems that affect the procedure, such as significant neck/trachea abnormalities.
  • You do not have a neck soft-tissue infection or a history of neck surgery.
  • Your blood clotting is within acceptable limits (not severely low platelets and not significantly abnormal clotting test results).
