Nerve block treatment for PTSD with strong stress-and-alertness symptoms

This Phase 3 study tests whether a procedure called a stellate ganglion block can reduce PTSD symptoms, especially feeling highly “on edge” (hyperarousal). You may join if you have PTSD despite appropriate usual treatments and are able to go through the procedure safely.

Who can take part

  • You have PTSD diagnosed by DSM-5 criteria, and your symptoms mainly include persistent feeling highly alert/on edge (hyperarousal).
  • You are between 18 and 69 years old, and you are currently seeing a mental health clinician.
  • You have tried appropriate PTSD treatments (talk therapy and/or medications) without enough benefit, and you are willing to try this procedure.
  • You are not at high risk for suicide in the last 30 days, as judged by your treating clinician.
  • You can safely have the procedure: not pregnant or breastfeeding, no major heart rhythm/blood pressure problems, no bleeding disorder, no infection at the procedure area, and you can tolerate the positioning and procedure.
  • You do not have conditions that commonly block participation, such as bipolar or psychotic disorder, moderate-to-severe substance use in the last 30 days, moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury, or severe lung disease (like severe COPD), plus no pneumothorax (collapsed lung) or related lung restrictions.
