- You’re a Veteran needing a below-knee amputation (for an uninfected problem), or a localized foot infection below the ankle that has been fully treated and cleaned out
- Your leg blood flow looks strong enough for healing (a pulse you can feel or a signal in the popliteal artery)
- You can and expect to join rehabilitation after surgery and work toward walking with a prosthesis
- The surgery is not being done because of a major infection reaching around the ankle area
- You do not have end-stage kidney disease (ESRD)
