Who can take part

  • You’re over 18 years old
  • Your health status is fairly stable (ASA 1 to 3)
  • You’re having lower back (lumbar) decompression and/or fusion surgery and you’ll need opioid medicine for pain around surgery
  • You’re not having outpatient surgery (it’s an inpatient stay)
  • You do not have major liver or kidney problems, serious heart or breathing problems, or other major health instability
  • You are not pregnant, can speak English, and you do not use illegal drugs or multiple substances (like cocaine, marijuana, or amphetamines)
