Who can take part

  • You are between 21 and 75 years old
  • You are having lumbar spine fusion surgery on 3 or fewer vertebrae
  • You can walk without help before surgery
  • You do not have severe kidney or liver disease
  • You are not allergic to the study medicines (ropivacaine, dexmedetomidine, or iohexol)
  • You are not taking strong painkillers (30 mg or more of morphine daily) and are not pregnant
  • You have not had previous lumbar spine surgery or cancer that spread to the spine
