Who can take part
- You are between 21 and 75 years old
- You are having lumbar spine fusion surgery on 3 or fewer vertebrae
- You can walk without help before surgery
- You do not have severe kidney or liver disease
- You are not allergic to the study medicines (ropivacaine, dexmedetomidine, or iohexol)
- You are not taking strong painkillers (30 mg or more of morphine daily) and are not pregnant
- You have not had previous lumbar spine surgery or cancer that spread to the spine
