Who can take part
- You are at least 18 years old and your spine has stopped growing.
- You are scheduled for a lumbar spinal fusion surgery that involves one or two levels of the lower back.
- You can understand and sign a consent form yourself (no legal guardian needed).
- You are not pregnant, not a prisoner, and you speak English.
- You have not taken high doses of opioid pain medication (more than about 30 mg of morphine per day) in the month before surgery.
- Your body mass index (BMI) is under 40.
