This Phase 2 trial tests a combination treatment to try to get rid of remaining cancer cells in young adults whose acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is in remission but still detectable at low levels. It may help patients eliminate “minimal residual disease” (small traces of leukemia cells) and reduce relapse risk.

Who can take part

  • Be 18 to 59 years old
  • Have AML (including certain secondary or treatment-related AML) confirmed by a bone marrow test
  • After initial induction chemotherapy, your leukemia must be in complete remission (or near-complete remission), but with detectable low-level disease
  • Be able to do daily activities at a level described as “ECOG 0 to 2,” and be well enough for treatment
  • Have certain blood counts and organ function levels near the time of randomization (enough white blood cells/ANC, platelets, and acceptable liver/kidney tests)

This trial tests whether it is safe to stop taking a type of chemotherapy (azacitidine or decitabine) combined with venetoclax if you have acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and have achieved a remission with no trace of leukemia cells. If you have been on this treatment for less than a year and are not eligible for a stem cell transplant, you may be able to stop therapy and be monitored closely.

Treating intermediate-risk AML in younger adults

This trial compares three different drug combinations for younger adults (18-59) with intermediate-risk AML. You will be assigned to one of three groups: standard chemotherapy (cytarabine + daunorubicin), that same chemotherapy plus venetoclax, or venetoclax combined with azacitidine.
