Salt substitute study for people on long-term dialysis

This study tests a potassium-containing salt substitute to see if it can be used safely for people on regular dialysis for kidney failure. You may be eligible if you already receive outpatient hemodialysis and meet several health and medication requirements.

Who can take part

  • You are an adult (age 21 or older) receiving regular outpatient hemodialysis (HD)
  • If you can become pregnant, you can provide a negative pregnancy test
  • Your recent blood potassium level is not dangerously high (not over 6.0 in the last 30 days)
  • You have not needed an unscheduled dialysis session for high potassium in the last 30 days
  • You attend most scheduled dialysis visits (at least 10 of the last 13)
  • You are not taking other potassium supplements, and you can consent to the study
