Testing heart oxygen reserve in metabolic syndrome and healthy adults

This study measures how much oxygen your heart can use during stress and at rest using an MRI scan. It compares people with metabolic syndrome (a cluster of health risks) to people without those risks, to understand differences in heart function.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old
  • You can give informed consent (agree to take part after understanding the study)
  • You either have metabolic syndrome (at least 3 of these: belly fat, high triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure, high fasting sugar) or are a healthy volunteer with no major heart/lung problems
  • You can safely have an MRI scan (no MRI-incompatible metal/implants, and not pregnant or possibly pregnant)
  • No caffeine in the 12 hours before the scan (coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, energy drinks)
  • For healthy volunteers: do not currently smoke and have no known major medical problems affecting the heart or lungs
