Breast cancer surgery with a tumor-bed boost and standard radiation

Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer (not just pre-cancer).
  • Your cancer is early stage in the armpit: no spread to lymph nodes on exam/imaging or biopsy.
  • Your planned treatment is breast-conserving surgery (not a full mastectomy).
  • You do not have cancer that has spread to distant organs, and the tumor is more than 5 mm from the skin with no rib or muscle involvement.
  • You have not had chemotherapy or other treatment before surgery, and you can get an MRI.
  • You can safely have study procedures: no serious uncontrolled heart disease, recent heart attack or stroke, uncontrolled diabetes, active infection, or certain other active illnesses; you must also have blood tests that meet lab thresholds and be able to follow up.
  • If you could become pregnant, you must use reliable birth control, and you must be willing to sign consent and attend follow-up.
