Telehealth family program for moderate to severe alcohol use

This study tests a brief treatment delivered by video that involves a Veteran and a concerned family member or friend. It’s meant for Veterans with ongoing alcohol problems, to see if family involvement helps them change drinking and stay safe during treatment.

Who can take part

  • Be a Veteran (age 21+), diagnosed with moderate to severe alcohol use disorder and had at least 2 heavy drinking days in the last 60 days
  • Have an adult family member or treatment companion willing to join the video sessions
  • Be able to understand and follow the study (screening suggests enough thinking/memory to give informed consent)
  • Have been on the same psychiatric (mood/behavior) medicines for at least 4 weeks before joining
  • Family companion must not be in alcohol/drug treatment for their own problem and should have low alcohol/drug screening scores
