Who can take part

  • Be 18 years or older and willing to give informed consent
  • Have a relevant condition: chronic traumatic spinal cord injury (more than 12 months) or degenerative spinal cord compression (DCM), OR qualify for the other group based on timing/symptoms
  • If you need MRI, you must be able to safely have MRI (for example, no pacemaker or metal in/near your body)
  • Have no history of major psychiatric or neurological conditions unless they are caused by spinal cord injury (for example, epilepsy from other causes may exclude)
  • Be able to follow study steps and instructions (including language/understanding), without substance misuse or a history suggesting you won’t stick to the plan
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding, and avoid planning pregnancy during the study; BMI must be 35 or less
