Cotrimoxazole for step-down treatment of ventilator pneumonia

Who can take part

  • You are an adult being treated in an ICU
  • You have been on a breathing machine for at least 5 days
  • A lung sample test confirms ventilator-associated pneumonia with bacteria that are sensitive to cotrimoxazole
  • You already received at least 24 hours of an appropriate “first” antibiotic that is working for this pneumonia
  • Your blood pressure and breathing are stable or improving (oxygen needs not getting worse)
  • You can take cotrimoxazole safely and are not pregnant or breastfeeding
