This trial tests whether a nebulized (inhaled) antibiotic called colistin can prevent lung infections in children who have been on a breathing machine for more than 48 hours. If your child is eligible, the treatment may help reduce the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Who can take part

  • Your child must be between 1 month and 14 years old.
  • Your child must have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 48 hours.
  • Your child must not already have a lung infection from the ventilator.
  • Your child must not be getting colistin through an IV or by mouth.
  • Your child must not be scheduled to come off the ventilator within the next 24 hours.
  • Your child must not have a tracheostomy (a tube placed directly into the windpipe).
