Study brain scans during tasks in chronic nerve pain

This study looks at how brain activity changes in people with long-lasting nerve pain using an MRI scan while you do simple behavioral tasks. It may help researchers understand brain function in chronic neuropathic pain and how it affects day-to-day abilities.

Who can take part

  • You have long-lasting nerve pain (chronic neuropathic pain) from nerve damage in the brain/spinal cord or outside the body
  • If you are in the control group, you must be matched to a case by age (within 5 years) and sex
  • You should not have a neurodegenerative or inflammatory brain/spine illness
  • You should not have a severe depression condition that affects functioning
  • Your opioid pain medicines must not be at high doses (more than 100 mg per day morphine-equivalent)
  • You must be able to follow instructions and complete the behavioral tasks
  • You must be able to have an MRI safely (no pacemaker or unsafe metal/foreign body in or near the eyes)
