Who can take part
- Age 18 to 70
- Diagnosed with major depression (no hallucinations/psychosis) for at least 4 weeks
- Recent symptom score showing moderate-to-severe depression (MADRS 18+ or HAM-D 15+ within 1 week)
- Able and willing to travel to the NIH and lie still for about 2 hours during scans
- No pregnancy; if you can become pregnant, use reliable birth control during the study
- Free of certain medicines for a set time before screening (2 weeks; longer for some specific drugs)
