Bronchoscopy treatment to shrink severe emphysema using heat

Who can take part

  • Be 40 to 75 years old and able to sign consent
  • Have severe emphysema that is worse in the upper lungs (GOLD stage 3 or 4) confirmed by a recent CT scan (within 6 months)
  • Have breathing test results showing moderate airflow limitation (FEV1 about 20% to under 45%) plus strong “over-inflation” on lung scans (TLC at least 100% and high residual volume)
  • Have oxygen and blood-gas results that are not too high in carbon dioxide (PaCO2 ≤ 50) and are adequate on room air (PaO2 > 50)
  • Not be a current smoker (no smoking for the last 6 months) and have tried and finished the recommended medical and rehab plans
  • Not have major exclusions such as certain lung/heart conditions, recent infections or flare-ups, major blood-clotting problems, or recent major lung/heart surgeries in the upper lung area
