Who can take part
- You are at least 18 years old and being treated in the emergency department for DKA
- Your blood sugar is above 14 mmol/L
- Your blood tests show DKA with low blood pH (<7.25) and low bicarbonate (<15 mmol/L)
- Your ketones are positive on a finger-prick test, and your anion gap is elevated (>12 mEq/L)
- A doctor decides you need care in a critical/intensive care area and IV fluids are appropriate
- You have not already had more than 2,000 mL of non-study fluids before entering the study
