Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are in the intensive care unit (ICU) or intermediate care unit (IMC)
  • You have metabolic acidosis, meaning your blood pH is 7.25 or lower, your carbon dioxide level is low, your bicarbonate is 20 or less, and your base excess is below -2
  • You have acute kidney injury at stage 2 or 3
  • You or your legal representative can give informed consent
