  • Be between 18 and 65 years old
  • Have a current major depressive disorder diagnosis confirmed by a short interview
  • Have depression that is at least moderate (MADRS score of 20 or higher)
  • Not have bipolar or other psychotic disorders (like schizophrenia) as a main diagnosis
  • Not have previously taken an SGLT2 medicine, like empagliflozin
  • Have no major kidney or liver problems, and meet study lab thresholds (GFR 45 or higher; A1c 8.0% or lower)
