Who can take part

  • Be between 18 and 70 years old
  • Have severe lupus symptoms (a high lupus activity score) and meet lupus diagnosis rules
  • Lupus must not respond well to at least two immunosuppressing medicines and/or one approved biologic for over 6 months
  • Have certain blood counts in acceptable ranges (hemoglobin, white blood cells, neutrophils, and platelets)
  • Have good heart function on an ultrasound test (ejection fraction at least 50%) and adequate kidney and liver function
  • Be able to safely have cells collected from a vein (apheresis), with pregnancy prevention for women who can become pregnant
