- You are age 65 or older
- You are having a major surgery that is not for the heart
- You will receive general anesthesia with a breathing tube
- You are having planned (not emergency) surgery
- You are at intermediate to high risk for breathing problems (based on a risk score)
- You can get and tolerate the special mouth cleaning and nutrition for at least 3 days
