Who can take part

  • You are age 65 or older
  • You are having a major surgery that is not for the heart
  • You will receive general anesthesia with a breathing tube
  • You are having planned (not emergency) surgery
  • You are at intermediate to high risk for breathing problems (based on a risk score)
  • You can get and tolerate the special mouth cleaning and nutrition for at least 3 days
