Artificial tears to prevent tear duct blockage during RAI therapy

This study tests if using artificial tears (eye drops that keep your eyes moist) can prevent tear duct blockage in people receiving high-dose radioactive iodine for thyroid cancer. If you qualify, you will use artificial tears during your treatment to see if they help keep your tear ducts open.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are receiving radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy for thyroid cancer, with a dose of at least 150 mCi.
  • You do not use any prescription eye drops (except artificial tears).
  • You have no history of eye injury, tear duct infection, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy with certain drugs (like 5-fluorouracil or docetaxel).
  • You do not have medical conditions that cause tear duct blockage (such as sarcoidosis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, or chronic lymphocytic leukemia).
  • You do not already have a blocked tear duct.
