Bariatric Surgery and its Effects on Fat, Immune Cells, and Cancer

This study looks at how bariatric (weight-loss) surgery affects fat metabolism, immune cells, and cancer risk in women with severe obesity and high cholesterol. If you are a woman aged 35–60, White or Black, with a BMI of 40 or higher and high triglycerides or LDL, you may be eligible.

Who can take part

  • You are a woman between 35 and 60 years old.
  • You are White or Black (the study aims to include equal numbers of each).
  • Your BMI is 40 or higher (severe obesity).
  • You have high triglycerides or LDL cholesterol, or you take medication for it.
  • You are scheduled for bariatric surgery but have not yet started the pre-op liquid diet.
  • You do not have diabetes, history of cancer, or chronic inflammatory conditions.
  • You have not taken anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen or steroids) in the past 15 days.
  • You are not on any prescription weight-loss medication (like Wegovy, Saxenda, or Contrave).
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy in the next year.
  • You have not had COVID-19 in the past 60 days.
