Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • You have a body mass index (BMI) that is either between 18.5 and 24.9 (lean) or between 35 and 50 (obese, planning gastric bypass surgery).
  • You do not smoke, take fish oil supplements, or have certain medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or inflammatory diseases.
  • You are not pregnant and have no significant stomach or bowel problems.
  • You are willing to stop taking dietary supplements that affect inflammation for one week before study visits.
  • If you are in the obese group, you have not lost more than 8% of your body weight since referral for surgery or more than 3% in the last 4 months.
