Brain and bowel recovery after ultra-low rectal cancer surgery

This trial studies how a noninvasive brain stimulation technique (TMS) and brain scans (fMRI) might help improve bowel function and quality of life after surgery for ultra-low rectal tumors. It is for patients who have had a specific surgery (intersphincteric resection) and a temporary ileostomy.

Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with an ultra-low rectal tumor.
  • You have had a surgery called intersphincteric resection and a temporary ileostomy (a bag for bowel waste).
  • You are willing to join the study and sign a consent form.
  • You do not have any serious complications from the surgery, such as a leak where the bowel was reconnected.
  • You do not have advanced, recurring, or spreading cancer.
  • You can have an fMRI brain scan (no metal implants in your body, no claustrophobia) and TMS treatment (no metal in your head, no epilepsy, no unstable heart condition).
