Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older.
- You have severe lung failure (ARDS) and are on a breathing machine for less than 24 hours.
- Your lung failure is caused by flu, a bacterial lung infection, pancreatitis, or peritonitis.
- You have health insurance and a family member or legal representative can give written permission for you to join.
- You do not have a low white blood cell count, HIV/AIDS, or any condition that makes a lung washing procedure unsafe.
