Who can take part

  • You are between 30 and 85 years old.
  • You had a stroke (clot or bleed) that caused weakness on one side, at least 6 months ago.
  • You can walk at least 30 feet (10 meters) on flat ground using a walker, cane, or other device, but you need someone nearby just in case.
  • You can walk on a treadmill at a slow speed (about the pace of a very slow shuffle) for at least 3 minutes.
  • You have not had more than 3 total hours of fast treadmill walking in the past year.

This study tests whether a short, high-intensity interval exercise program is safe and practical for people who are recovering from a stroke during inpatient rehabilitation.
