Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are scheduled to receive an epidural or spinal anesthesia (a numbing shot near your spine), and the skin where the needle goes in is healthy (no cuts, rashes, or infections)
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder (like hemophilia or low platelets) or a neurological condition (like multiple sclerosis or nerve damage in your legs)
  • You are not taking blood thinners (like heparin or warfarin) that would continue after the procedure
  • You have no major spine surgery, deformity, or metal implants in your back
  • You are not allergic to ultrasound gel or medical adhesives, and you can sit up for the procedure
