Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 60 years old.
  • You are scheduled for a planned (not emergency) general surgery.
  • Your planned pain relief technique includes an epidural catheter (a thin tube placed near your spine).
  • Your overall health status is rated as ASA I, II, or III (healthy to controlled medical conditions, not severe).
  • The bony bumps on your spine (spinous processes) cannot be easily felt when a doctor examines you.
  • You do not have scoliosis or other deformities of your spine, and you are willing to take part in the study.
