Faith-focused counseling for depression in African Americans

This study tests whether adding a faith-based support group to a counseling program helps African American adults with depression feel better. You would join group sessions that combine talking through your thoughts (cognitive behavioral therapy) with fellowship and spiritual support.

Who can take part

  • You identify as an African American man or woman.
  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You have symptoms of major depression (like feeling down or losing interest in things) that are moderate to severe.
  • You are not currently in talk therapy (psychotherapy).
  • You do not have active thoughts of harming yourself. (The study team will check on this.)
  • If you recently changed psychiatric medications, you'd need to wait 4 weeks before joining.
  • If you had past alcohol or drug dependence, you must be clean and sober for at least 3 months.
