Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 75 years old.
  • You have squamous cell carcinoma in the middle or lower part of your esophagus, and the tumor is smaller than 8 cm.
  • You are well enough to have daily activities (ECOG score 0 or 1) and have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 18.5.
  • Your cancer has not spread to the windpipe or major artery, and you have no fistula (abnormal connection) or hoarseness caused by the tumor.
  • You do not have an active autoimmune disease, active hepatitis B or C, HIV, tuberculosis, or other uncontrolled infections.
  • Your blood counts, kidney and liver function are within acceptable ranges.
  • You have not had prior chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy for any cancer.
