Virtual reality and nerve block for chronic knee pain

This study tests whether using virtual reality (VR) before a standard heat-based nerve block (radiofrequency ablation) can improve relief of long-term knee pain caused by arthritis. If you qualify, you'll receive the RFA procedure and may be randomly assigned to also use VR.

Who can take part

  • You have knee pain that averages at least 4 out of 10 in intensity.
  • An X-ray shows you have osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis) in your knee.
  • Your knee pain has lasted more than 6 weeks, and you haven't had any surgery on that knee.
  • You have never had a radiofrequency ablation (a treatment that uses heat to block pain nerves) on the affected knee.
  • You are not taking strong painkillers (opioids) long-term, and you can safely stop blood thinners for the procedure.
