Ultrasound test for kidney injury in the ICU

This study tests whether a special ultrasound with a contrast dye can help doctors better assess acute kidney injury (a sudden drop in kidney function) in patients in the intensive care unit. If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with acute kidney injury within 24 hours of ICU admission, this imaging test may help guide care.

Who can take part

  • You are over 18 years old.
  • You have been diagnosed with acute kidney injury within 24 hours of being admitted to the ICU.
  • You are expected to stay in the ICU for at least 48 hours.
  • A special ultrasound with contrast dye will be done within 24 hours of your kidney injury diagnosis.
  • You do not have advanced chronic kidney disease (stage 4 or worse) or need dialysis.
  • You are not pregnant and do not have allergies to the contrast dye used in this study.
