Jarvik 2015 heart pump study for children with severe heart failure

Who can take part

  • Your child's weight must be between 8 and 30 kilograms (about 18 to 66 pounds).
  • Your child must have severe heart failure (Class IV) that doesn't get better with medicines, and they need a mechanical heart pump to keep them alive until a transplant.
  • Your child's heart must have two working pumping chambers (a 'two-ventricle' heart), not a single ventricle or certain complex heart defects.
  • Your child must be on the waiting list for a heart transplant, or be eligible to be listed.
  • Your child must not have severe problems with the right side of the heart, a serious heart rhythm issue, or other major organ failure (kidney, liver, lungs) that would make the pump unsafe.
