Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older.
- You have dilated cardiomyopathy (enlarged, weak heart) with specific measurements: your heart's main pumping chamber is larger than 5.5 cm and your ejection fraction (pumping strength) is below 25%.
- Your doctor plans to use a temporary heart pump called Impella 5.5 to help your heart while you wait for a heart transplant or a decision about transplant.
- You have NOT had a balloon pump for more than 7 days or any other temporary heart support device before the Impella is placed.
- You do NOT have other major heart conditions like congenital heart disease, certain types of cardiomyopathy (hypertrophic, restrictive, or from sarcoidosis/amyloidosis), or a recent heart muscle infection, and you do not have a mechanical heart valve, blood clots in your heart, or severe artery disease that would make the pump unsafe.
